| so it took me a realization that i am, indeed, old to get me to write an entry. i def never worked this hard at penn...and we're reaching exeter-level work load...almost.
so, what got me thinking that i was old. the straw that broke the camel's back was finding out today that one of my dear friends from HS was engaged...wow. i've got my share of married/engaged friends...but this is my first close friend that's taken the plunge. god, i need to stop f'ing around and get back in the game.
the explanation to my profile line, about being a father and a pastor...so, starts out friday late afternoon. in my apt elevator, im riding down to get my mail. and you know kids, they've got no censor...so this little boy looks up and asks me, "do you have a kid?" it gets better, saturday afternoon...just wrapping up a community service project and stop by a table to add my name to their listserve. and the girl behind the counter goes, "this is really gonna be out of the blue...but are you a pastor?" (side note: i came up with the best come back five minutes to late, "no, but i can show you god in another way...damn me and my slow wit!). i've usually had problems with people thinking i was younger than i actually am. i turn 24 and now ppl think im old?! what happened to the part between getting carded for renting violent video games and being asked if i was a man of god. wtf does a stereotypical pastor look like anyhow?!

| so with football back on, ive naturally been watching a bunch of abc and espn. of course, the networks are pushing the premiers of all their shows. which brings me to my point (not related to football...after the horrible fantasy week i've had...i don't think i can think about football until i have to set my rosters for next week)...who came up with the taglines for the celebrities?! k, so there are some ones that makes sense...tucker carlson, political pundit...willa ford, pop star sensation. now those may not be verbatim, but there is one that i know is verbatim: mario lopez, latin lover?! who proclaimed him to be a latin lover? has he done anything other than saved by the bell?! it's been a while since i've seen an episode, but last i checked there werent that many hot and heavy love scenes. which brings me to my next point...when i become a world famous bioengineer, and somehow land a role in a dancing with the stars type show...can i be the "pinoy player"
i've got a serious post brewing...i just need to stop doing homework to get it written up...
::edit:: ahh, gotta love the responses from my frat brothers
EAJohnsen: oh EAJohnsen: comment on your xanga EAJohnsen: if you continue to bad mouth ac slater EAJohnsen: i will be forced to thrash you

| it's a funny thing...talking to my friends online and getting the jokes about being in a "developing nation." them teasing me about getting internet here, power outages, state of poverty...
and it struck me the other day while we were driving around (either down timog or t morato ave) that there was more culinary variety in this short (<0.5 km) stretch of road than i was able to find in nashville in over a year. my dad jokes that the filipinos are "getting sophisticated" when he sees all these new cuisines popping up everywhere. i mean, there are restaurants from all different parts of the world (aside from the variety of chinese restaurants, which have been everywhere as far back as i can remember)...japanese has always been popular but sushi is making more of a mainstream push, italian places, traditional filipino food, spanish, indian, thai, malaysian...hell, there's even a place that serves bibingka in crepes right down the street from my parents place. maybe it reflects how much food and cuisine is a part of filipino culture...but the thing that struck me is, what right do some americans have to look down on "third world" countries? i know my friends bring up the state of the country in jest...but its hard to convey how much of a city metro manila is to people that have this notion that we're still running around in loin cloths throwing coconuts around. a lot of this is in the back of my mind cuz my bro is planning to bring his long-time gf to visit for xmas this year...and i'm curious to see how she reacts to a densely populated, modern city where even the pig farmers have cellphones.
it's tough to convey to people what it's like being in a city where poverty is so widespread...but at the same time, culture and weath are evident on every street corner.

| every time i trim down a little, the time comes for me to visit my parents in the philippines. except this time, i'll likely be back in december, which won't give me nearly enough time to lose whatever weight i gain over the next three weeks.
it's not even 4 pm and i think i've eaten more than i usually do in 2 days!
oh well, so much for being in shape come orientation...at least i'll be well rested and fattened up for winter after three weeks here | | |
